Drawing on conversations with the artist and his contemporaries, Lindo discusses Bearden's roots in the Harlem Renaissance and the South, the urban environment of his youth, his relationship to art and music, the sociopolitical direction his work took in the 1960s, and his influence on younger artists, writers, and musicians. Lindo also relates the impact of meeting Bearden early in her career.
