Additional Info

1937, 94 min.

Along with Rules of the Game, Grand Illusion ranks high on the list of the greatest films of all time. It is also one of the most powerful antiwar films ever made. The film communicates the shared humanity of various protagonists from different sides – and different backgrounds – during World War I. Renoir served in the war, and the experience made him a committed pacifist. The uniform worn by Jean Gabin in the film was Renoir’s own. Erich von Stroheim also stars.
