Additional Info

1939, 110 min.

Rules of the Game explores romantic and class relationships, as well as social codes, during a hunting weekend at the country house of an upper-class family. The film premiered on the eve of war, and some audience members were so incensed by its wry depiction of French society dancing on the edge of disaster that they tried to set fire to the screen. The French government banned the film a month later, and during France’s occupation the Nazis destroyed many of the prints. Fortunately, the film survived, and it endures for many as Renoir’s masterpiece.
