Starring Setsuko Hara and Chishu Ryu – Ozu’s favorite actors – Late Spring tells the story of the relationship between a widowed father and his grown-up daughter as she prepares for marriage. It is a film about love and loss, and the tensions between tradition and modernity in postwar Japan. Along with Tokyo Story, it is Ozu’s greatest work – a quiet and deep meditation on family emotions and social forces. Atsuta was Ozu’s regular director of photography; their work together is distinctive for its use of low angles, 360-degree filming of groups of characters, and other techniques that bring the viewer into the intimacy of scenes.
