Material Explorations: Paula De Cristofaro and Nancy Lim on Vija Celmins

Thursday, March 28, 2019

6 p.m.–7 p.m.

Floor 4, exhibition entrance

Free with museum admission

Join Paula De Cristofaro, paintings conservator, and Nancy Lim, assistant curator of painting and sculpture, on an in-depth exploration of Vija Celmins: To Fix the Image in Memory. In Celmins’s work, materials and meaning are inextricably linked. As conservator and curator, De Cristofaro and Lim will offer dual perspectives on a selection of works for a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the creative process of this remarkable artist.

Since this talk will take place in the galleries, space will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the Speakers:

Paula De Cristofaro is the paintings conservator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Prior to joining SFMOMA’s Conservation Department in 1990, she worked at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. She completed the post-graduate Conservation Training Program at the Courtauld Institute of Art (University of London) and was an advanced intern in conservation at the Harvard Art Museums.

Nancy Lim is the assistant curator of painting and sculpture at SFMOMA, where her research focuses on postwar and contemporary California art. She contributed to the Vija Celmins retrospective now on view, and is co-curator of the forthcoming exhibitions Mythos, Psyche, Eros: Jess and California (March–October 2019) and the 2019 SECA Art Award (November 2019–April 2020). Prior to SFMOMA, she held curatorial positions at the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
