Matthew Barney: DRAWING RESTRAINT offers an in-depth look at the unifying role performance plays in the artist’s multimedia practice. Barney has developed an innovative approach to extending the content of his experimental film and video into sculptural installations, photography, and drawings. As a whole, this integrated body of artwork and performance documentation presents the various ways the artist uses his body to illustrate a system of creation. Zimbardo discusses Barney’s performance strategies as artist and actor, contextualizing his studio actions within a history of filmed art performance that emphasizes physical repetition, mark-making, and process.
