Opening Reception: Kara Walker’s Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)

Join us for this special community opening reception for Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)*, a newly commissioned work by Kara Walker. The fascinating installation features a field of automatons trapped in a never-ending cycle of ritual and struggle. These robotic dolls, repositories of the human soul, recall mechanized medieval icons that evidenced divinity, vitality, and the promise of faith. This free public opening reception will include a cash bar.

Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine) will open to the public starting at 10 a.m. on July 1, with the reception to follow from 4–6 p.m. that day.

About the artist

New York–based artist Kara Walker is best known for her candid investigations of race, gender, sexuality, and violence through silhouetted figures that have appeared in exhibitions worldwide. Walker’s work can be found in numerous museums and public collections, including The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Tate Gallery, London; the Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo (MAXXI), Rome; and Deutsche Bank, Frankfurt. She lives and works in New York.
