As a reaction to the restrictions of intellectual property rights, the Open Source Initiative provides free computer software via the Web and allows anyone to contribute software as long as the underlying source codes are visible and shared. Explorations of the creative applications of open source promise to expand its use beyond software development. This panel discusses the conceptual basis for the open-source movement, its history, and legal issues and presents artistic projects incorporating open-source technology.
