Phil Chang’s series of unfixed (still light-sensitive) prints challenges conventional expectations of photographic permanence. Once exposed to light, his images disappear in a matter of hours.
The works on view in About Time: Photography in a Moment of Change have already been fully exposed. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, a fresh set of prints will be installed, and visitors will be able to watch them darken over the course of the day. By the time the museum closes, the prints will bear no trace of the original image; only monochromatic rectangles will remain.
