New Work

Jill Giegerich
June 23–August 21, 1988

This installment of the New Work series highlights Jill Giegerich’s free-flowing, invented forms and decorative colors. These paintings are informed by the artist’s interest in Hindu stories of Shiva and Marxist ideas of the evolution of consciousness, with their shared emphasis on the power of activity — whether creation (for Shiva) or work (for Marx) — to inspire awareness and understanding bringing together these two otherwise dramatically different philosophies. What intrigues Giegerich is not pure abstraction, but the ways in which we form images and ideas.
