From the Archive: Artist Talk with Janet Cardiff, Jim Hodges, Kathryn Spence, and Steve Wolfe

“I composed what I thought was an artist’s statement, but today when I read it it seems like a confession.” So begins Steve Wolfe in this artist talk and discussion recorded on October 30, 1997. Organized in conjunction with Present Tense: Nine Artists in the Nineties, this program features four of the artists whose work was featured in that exhibition — Janet Cardiff, Jim Hodges, Kathryn Spence, and Steve Wolfe — in conversation with moderator Julie Ault, an artist and independent curator who contributed to the exhibition catalogue. Ault opens the program with a brief presentation on the work of her friend and colleague Felix Gonzalez-Torres, using his practice to illuminate the exhibition’s broader themes: “time, language, … issues of the body, truth, memory, and history.” Ault’s talk is followed by individual presentations by Cardiff, Hodges, Spence, and Wolfe, and a question-and-answer session with the audience.
