From the Archive: Panel Discussion with Gretchen Bender, Dara Birnbaum, and Julia Scher

Originally presented on May 6, 1993, in conjunction with Thresholds and Enclosures, this program showcases three of the exhibition’s featured artists — Gretchen Bender, Julia Scher, and Dara Birnbaum — in conversation with Robert R. Riley, former SFMOMA curator of media arts. Bender begins, describing how a public health crisis influenced her televisual work in the 1980s; individual presentations by Scher and Birnbaum follow. Throughout the talk, the panelists critically engage with topical issues of cyberculture, surveillance, media representation, and viewer participation. The program concludes with an informative question-and-answer session with the audience.

Please note that due to a recording error, a portion of the question-and-answer segment is missing.
