From the Archive: William Wegman Artist Talk

Though best known for his playful photographs of dogs, William Wegman has also produced a large and stylistically varied body of animal-free artwork throughout his successful career. In this artist talk, originally presented on August 16, 1988, in conjunction with the exhibition William Wegman: Polaroids and Videos, the artist illuminates lesser-known aspects of his oeuvre, including his paintings, drawings, and conceptual art. During her introduction of Wegman, SFMOMA Senior Curator of Photography Sandra S. Phillips notes, “I’ve never seen our exhibition spaces more crowded with happy viewers, nor listened to more guffaws as for our current show.” Indeed, Wegman delivers a comically deadpan review of his work. The recording concludes with a question-and-answer session with the audience.
