The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Teen Visionaries (SFMOMA_tv) and the Youth Leadership Institute’s Friday Night Live (FNL) program seek youths to participate in the Fourth Annual Keeping It Reel Youth-Made Media Festival appearing at SFMOMA on Friday, May 24, 2002. Organized entirely by students, the festival showcases exciting new film and video projects, live performances and limited-edition zines produced by Bay Area teenagers. To have work considered for the festival, youths age 11 to 21 must submit their projects to the Youth Leadership Institute by Wednesday, May 1, 2002 (submission guidelines below).
SFMOMA_tv is an after-school program administered by the SFMOMA Education Department. Giving teens the opportunity to discuss and produce art, the program aims to strengthen students’ connections to their peers, the Museum and the arts community at large by providing an accessible environment in which to explore artistic processes and ideas. The Youth Leadership Institute’s Friday Night Live program builds partnerships for positive and healthy youth development by involving teens as active leaders and resources for their communities. FNL is committed to the prevention of drug and alcohol use. Programs facilitate the development of an array of skills while promoting healthy lifestyles among teens.
A collaborative project of SFMOMA_tv and FNL, Keeping It Reel encourages students to use film and video as tools for exploring community activism, achieving personal expression, gaining technical expertise and debunking stereotypes of youth in media. The program offers emerging young artists a forum for their work and an opportunity to engage in open dialogue with their peers and community members. Keeping It Reel tickets for adults accompanied by a student, available at SFMOMA, are $5; the event is free for children and middle school and high school students with valid ID. Tickets include admission to a post-screening and performance reception, where young artists and audience members are invited to exchange ideas about the work.
Keeping It Reel Submission Guidelines
Bay Area residents aged 11 to 21 are encouraged to submit zines and VHS tapes labeled with their names, addresses and phone numbers to the Youth Leadership Institute, 246 First Street, Suite 400, San Francisco, CA 94105. Video entries must not exceed 15 minutes and must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1, 2002, for consideration.
