diamond Dust Glimmers In The Air At SFMOMA Contemporary Extension Presents A Pop Art Celebration June 12, 2004

Released: April 02, 2004 · Download (37 KB PDF)

What
Join Contemporary Extension (CX), the young auxiliary of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), for DIAMOND DUST, a gala celebration of the pop art movement and the glamour of Andy Warhol’s notorious Factory headquarters in New York. This event is presented in conjunction with SFMOMA’s current exhibition Pop! From San Francisco Collections, but attendees won’t find any soup cans here—a lavish spread will be provided by some of San Francisco’s finest eateries including RNM Restaurant, Talulla, Street, Le Petit Robert, Town Hall, Bambuddha, Quince, A16, and Cabaret Chocolates. Partygoers will enjoy specialty drinks by VOX Raspberry Vodka and Southcorp Wines, and dance to the stellar beats of Joint Sessions and DJ Kramer.

The party’s theme celebrates the art and culture associated with Warhol and his entourage in the early 1970s, a moment that transformed the art and attitudes of a generation. Inspired by Warhol’s use of diamond dust in his paintings, the motif also alludes to flash and celebrity, fashion and indulgence, and the vinyl-and-velvet seduction of the era.

DIAMOND DUST will present an elaborate fashion show exploring the intersection of “material culture” and haute couture, featuring designs and concepts by Nancy Talyor and Abra Berman of Alencon Couture; Alison Hoekstra of Retrofit; Kyra Legg of Kyramia; Sarah Larson Design; Suzanne Hanley and Christopher Farris of Atelier des Modistes; and Carola Anderson in collaboration with choreographer Kimi Okada of ODC. A runway installation will be created specifically for the event by Iwamoto Scott Architecture and architecture students from California College of the Arts and U.C. Berkeley. Other DIAMOND DUST offerings include portraiture by Chen Design Associates and David Fenton Photography that will transform guests into cultural icons; interactive installations by Sackett Design Associates, Koko Represents, and Elixir Design; larger-than-life iconic sculptures by Glama-Rama and Sillapere; and roving cinematographers who will offer “fifteen minutes of fame” to guests as they hobnob with Andy Warhol and other Factory icon impersonators.
