SFMOMA Appoints New Trustees Carl Pascarella, Ira Hirschfield, Charles H. Smith And Michael W. Wilsey

At their April 3 meeting, the Board of Trustees of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) elected Carl Pascarella as a new member of the Board. Pascarella has served as president and chief executive officer of Visa U.S.A. since 1993. Prior to that, he was president of Visa International’s Asia-Pacific Region and director of the Asia-Pacific Regional Board for 11 years. He is also a board member of BroadVision, Inc., the Stanford Graduate School of Management, the Asian Art Museum, the Commonwealth Club of California, the San Francisco Ballet, the San Francisco Symphony and the Tokyo Club. He has a master’s degree in management from the Stanford Sloan Program at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.

Also elected to the SFMOMA Board of Trustees during the past fiscal year were Ira Hirschfield, Charles H. “Chuck” Smith and Michael W. Wilsey. Hirschfield, who is extensively involved in the philanthropic field, has been president and trustee of the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr., Fund in San Francisco since 1992. He helped create the F.B. Heron Foundation based in New York City and for 10 years served as its first chairman and president. He is the former director of philanthropy for the Rockefeller Family and Associates, and founder and past president of the Philanthropic Collaborative. Before joining Rockefeller, Hirschfield was executive director of the Levi Strauss Foundation, senior fellow for the Council on Foundations, and consulting director of the Agent Orange Assistance Fund. He has also served on the boards of Independent Sector and the Council on Foundations.

Charles H. “Chuck” Smith is president and CEO of SBC West. He graduated from California State University at Los Angeles in 1967, and over the course of his 35-year career at SBC Pacific Bell, he has held a wide range of senior executive positions. He is an executive advisory board member of the University of California, Davis Graduate School of Management and serves on the University of California, Berkeley Extension Program board. He is an advisor for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the Magic Johnson Foundation and the Los Angeles Urban League’s Board of Directors, and he serves as chair of the annual United Negro College Fund Walk-a-Thon in Los Angeles. Smith is also a member of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Posse.

Since 1982 Michael W. Wilsey has been chairman and chief executive officer of Wilsey Bennett, Inc., with activities in real estate, floral transportation and investments. He is on a number of charitable and community boards including the UCSF Foundation and Investment Committee, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Center for Law in the Public Interest and the BASIC Fund (Bay Area Scholarships for Inner-City Children). He is also a member of the Schwab Mutual Funds business board. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1965 and received an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1968.
