SFMOMA Commemorates September 11 And Life After With Special Family Day Creations And Donations

Released: October 19, 2001 ·

What
SFMOMA’s Family Day is a special celebration of life featuring hands-on art projects, docent-led gallery activities, music and performances for the whole family. The day will be reflective as well as festive with artworks created by both children and adults. Children are free with $2 admission for accompanying adults. All admissions proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross. In addition, all firefighters, police officers and emergency medical technicians and their families will receive free admission to the Museum for the duration of the Ansel Adams at 100 exhibition, which runs through January 13, 2002.

Who
Zahra Almufti, a painter who lives in Lafayette and has spent the last 25 years in the Bay Area (she is originally from Iraq), will lead an art project for children and adults as part of the California Remembrance Project. Zahra believes that “art, the universal language, is healing and transformative for both the artist and the recipient.” She will help people express themselves through drawing and collage as well as words to send creations of love and connection to the east coast chapters of the American Red Cross (some works will remain here and be displayed on the Minna and Natoma exterior gallery walls of the SFMOMA garage).

Dance Through Time will teach families moves from Baroque to Salsa, the Thurgood Marshall Academic High School band will perform a jazz program in the Wattis Theater and docents will lead hands-on projects with gallery activities.
