When the new international terminal opens at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in December, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) MuseumStore will be its only retail establishment dedicated exclusively to art, architecture and design. The 2,200-square-foot store is located in the main hall, immediately behind the ticket counters in the departure lounge. Designed by Julie Brown and Margot Criscitiello of Re:Design for architect of record McCall Design Group, the SFMOMA MuseumStore at SFO has set the storefront design standard for the rest of the retail operations in the new terminal.
SFMOMA Director David A. Ross states, “The Museum is looking forward to bringing the experience of modern art to as many people as possible. With the SFMOMA MuseumStore at SFO, we bring the best of contemporary art and design to a multitude of international travelers. It is very exciting to be part of this new venture.”
The interior design of the store reflects the architectural language of the Museum building in the South-of-Market area of San Francisco. Re:Design used a similar palette of colors and materials to create a retail environment tailored to the traveling customer. The walls are punctuated with a series of illuminated columns that display the SFMOMA MuseumStore’s diverse line of products. Bold shapes and reflective surfaces transform the white interior into a showcase for the merchandise, which ranges from contemporary jewelry and accessories to art books and signature SFMOMA products.
The SFMOMA MuseumStore’s SFO storefront is constructed of white laminated-metal panels, stainless steel and glass. Two sliding steel-and-glass door systems may be left wide open during business hours for maximum crowd flow and exterior visibility. Inside, the floor is accentuated by alternating black and gray stripes of vinyl flooring that echo SFMOMA’s striated granite floor; fixtures are constructed of glass, metal and wood. The overall effect—a modern, well-lit space with great merchandising flexibility—is an effective extension of the Museum’s identity.
The SFMOMA MuseumStore at SFO will specifically cater to the needs of travelers by offering a mix of unique gifts, souvenirs and other portable merchandise, including an exclusive line of commemorative SFO products.
