The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA)’s noontime lecture-and-luncheon series Art Sandwiched In returns this spring on March 13 and May 22 with two panel discussions exploring the curatorial process and the legacy of photography in San Francisco.
Organized by SFMOMA’s Modern Art Council (MAC)—the museum’s primary fund-raising auxiliary for over 75 years—this popular “education over lunch” series gathers artists, curators, and other leading members of the broader arts community to share their perspectives over an elegant seated lunch at the museum. This season’s panelists include prominent figures such as artist Richard Misrach, Jens Hoffmann of California College of the Arts (CCA), and Frish Brandt, director of Fraenkel Gallery.
The events begin promptly at noon and end by 1:30 p.m. Tickets start at $150. Reservations can be made by calling the Modern Art Council at 415.357.4125 or emailing mac@sfmoma.org.
Proceeds from Art Sandwiched In support SFMOMA’s exhibitions and also enable the museum to serve more than 50,000 students, teachers, and families each year through innovative education programs.

Haas Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture, SFMOMA; Jens Hoffmann, director, Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, California College of the Arts; Constance Lewallen, adjunct curator, Berkeley Art Museum. Moderated by Ruth Berson, deputy museum director of curatorial affairs, SFMOMA.

The city has retained this stature over time, driven by innovative artists, public interest, local patrons, important art schools, and outstanding museums and galleries. How can San Francisco continue to grow as a center for photography? How will the city remain relevant in the global forum of photographic art? Panelists, including renowned local photographer Richard Misrach, will explore what is currently happening and what needs to be done to ensure that San Francisco stays at the forefront of photography.
