This composite pairs a detail of a newspaper fragment in Untitled [black painting with portal form] with the corresponding excerpt from a February 28, 1952, issue of the New York Times. Although the articles title is slightly obscured by black paint, “German Reds Rebuff” is legible. Additional information about the dating of the Black paintings may be found in the essays on Untitled [black painting with portal form] and Untitled [glossy black painting].
