NARRATOR:

Heres the artist Dan Graham in his New York City studio. His work isnt characterized by a visual style, but rather by an underlying set of ideas. Since the 1960s hes explored those ideas in film, video, performance, photography, architectural models, and glass-and-mirror structures.

DAN GRAHAM:

A lot of my pieces are actually like, like showcase windows. And you see — when you look in a showcase window, you can see images of yourself superimposed with thick glass onto, onto a shoe or something you might buy. There are also mirrors inside, a deconstructing image of yourself so you dont feel like a whole person. So I think it has a lot to do with seeing yourself: its, its the anxiety of seeing yourself in a mirror and being seen by other people. Its also the fact that there is no self. The self is a function of being seen by people, who then see you.
