Sze Tsung Nicolás Leong Yihaoqiao, Yuzhong District, Chongqing, from the series History Images, 2002
Leong’s extraordinary History Images series (2002-2005) documents the rapid and profound changes taking place in the urban landscape of contemporary China. Here, salmon-colored housing developments crowd the background while workers in colorful clothing move about an immense pit in the foreground.
The series of large-scale photographs comprises a number of different categories, including demolitions, construction sites, streets, interiors, and figures. They often juxtapose towering new construction with older buildings, which represent a rapidly disappearing past. Such pictures remind us that the writing of a new history inevitably brings about the erasure of another.
