Artwork Detail

This detail shows a few of the torn map fragments (taken from Rand McNally & Company road atlases) that Rauschenberg collaged into Mother of God. Rauschenberg articulated the circular form in the center of the work with both paint and paper. In some sections, the edge of the circle is formed by paint applied over collaged paper, while in others the arc is created by areas of torn paper affixed to the painted surface.
