The thousands of artworks at SFMOMA offer countless opportunities to look closely and think deeply about some of the most amazing artists of our time. To celebrate both the artists on view in the newly expanded museum and the creative communities of the Bay Area, 50 Artists invites local artists and creative professionals to share how icons of modern and contemporary art matter to them. This week, SFMOMA’s own Steven Dye shares his insights into the immersive installation, The Refusal of Time (2012) by William Kentridge.

Dye is a multi-disciplinary artist, working primarily with sound, projection, and live performance. He has exhibited his work and lectured at venues and film festivals throughout North America, Australia, and Europe. Dye is also a preparator at SFMOMA. From 2009 to 2012 he was the technical director for the tour of the SFMOMA–sponsored exhibition William Kentridge: 5 Themes.
