When Matisse’s Femme au chapeau debuted, art collector Leo Stein called it “brilliant and powerful,” but also deemed it “the nastiest smear of paint [I had ever seen].” His sister Gertrude Stein bought it anyway. That’s the spirit we’re channeling tonight.
Join us for an evening of hands-on art making inspired by Matisse’s scandalous portrait. Craft your own chapeau, paint a boldly colored portrait, or create a drawing that breaks with convention.
No experience is necessary as there’s no right way to be creative. All materials and guidance provided.
Marcy Petit is a French visual artist who explores ecology, feminism, memory, and social identity through an interdisciplinary practice that spans photography, printmaking, installation, performance, video, and textiles. She studied fine art at the University of Rennes and earned a master’s degree in contemporary art management from the University of Leeds. After living in the UK for many years, she now lives and works in San Francisco where she is a new studio resident artist at Root Division. Alongside her artistic practice, she frequently designs and leads art workshops for children and adults. Petit has exhibited internationally and continues to develop new bodies of work that foster dynamic conversations about the evolving relationships between art, society, and nature. Bad Art Club is a San Francisco–based creative practice that supports wellness and belonging through low-pressure, sober, collective art making using reclaimed materials. Since its inception in 2024, Bad Art Club has inspired thousands of people from all walks of life to reclaim their creative agency by making “bad” art as a pathway to personal and collective liberation.
Founded by Julianne Costa, a trauma-informed facilitator and self-proclaimed bad art teacher, Bad Art Club serves as an antidote to over-productivity and perfectionism. Through workshops, retreats, and interactive art pop-ups, Bad Art Club offers participants a reprieve from modern stressors, a safe space to experiment with new ways of being, a genuine sense of belonging, and the radical permission to be bold, colorful, and messy.

Monica Lee is a San Francisco–based teaching artist who teaches creative re-use workshops in the Bay Area for organizations including ScrapSF, SFMOMA, Google, Ruth’s Table, and FabMO.
