For the closing segment of Afterlude/Prelude: Artists Respond to Nam June Paik, join us onsite at SFMOMA to witness the premiere performance of Nam June Paik’s DO IT YOURSELF (1961/62), played on piano. In the Fluxus tradition of event scores, DO IT YOURSELF provides a simple set of directions, as written by Paik in the excerpt below:

DO IT YOURSELF

Play in San Francisco
the left-hand part of the Fugue No .1 (C.Major)
of the “Wohltemperiertes 1” (J.S.Bach)

Play in Shanghai
the right hand-part of the Fugue No.1 (C.Major)
of the “Wohltemperiertes 1” J.S.Bach)

Join us in the Gina and Stuart Peterson White Box on Floor 4 to hear pianist Sophia (Shuhui) Zhou play the left-hand part, while pianist Hewen Ma plays the right-hand part in Shanghai, which will be projected and amplified in the space. A video feed of both performances will be streamed simultaneously to the online audience as part of the Afterlude/Prelude webcast.

Afterlude/Prelude: Artists Respond to Nam June Paik is jointly organized by SFMOMA and the National Gallery Singapore. The performance DO IT YOURSELF is presented in collaboration with Chronus Art Center.
