In this 2017 documentary, Agnes Varda joins photographer and street artist JR — whose digital mural The Chronicles of San Francisco is currently on view at the museum — on a road trip through rural France in his signature black photobooth van. Together, this unlikely duo winds across the French countryside and coast, from mining towns to farmlands to shipping ports, photographing the faces of the people they encounter. Each stop on their route is interwoven with vignettes of Varda and JR on the road, singing along to pop music, sharing memories, and bickering (sometimes playfully) over JR’s sunglasses. The result is a poignant filmic tapestry that knits together many disparate stories into one.
