SFMOMA Family Programs go to the movies! Did you know that the museum’s Phyllis Wattis Theater boasts a state-of-the-art cinema experience? Join us for a special family screening of the film Harlem Ice, brought to you by our friends at SFFILM.

Harlem Ice is a five-part documentary series following the girls of Figure Skating in Harlem as they prepare for competitions, performances, and a life-changing global experience. Through their eyes, we experience the highs and lows of the FSH Season, and the unique experiences they have as girls of color breaking the ice ceiling and gaining access to a global stage. We follow sisters Tori and Ashley, newbie Adrianna, and senior Ariyana, and see how each girl makes her mark and helps to put Harlem Ice on the map.

This screening will feature episodes 1 and 2 of the series, as well as a virtual Q + A with Director Samantha Knowles and Figure Skating in Harlem Creative Director Ila Epperson following the film.

Harlem Ice will begin streaming on Disney+ in February. Recommended for ages eight and up. Runtime: 60 min.

This special event, in honor of Black History Month and hosted by SFFILM Education under its Family Programming initiative, in partnership with SFMOMA, is free and open to the public. While at the museum, be sure to check out two free-to-see exhibitions: Kara Walker’s Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine) on Floor 1 and 2024 SECA Art Award: Rose D’Amato, Angela Hennessy, Rupy C. Tut on Floor 2.
