Pierre Huyghe’s Singing in the Rain

Thursday, Feb 2, 2023

5:30 p.m.

Jean and James Douglas Family Sculpture Garden, Floor 5

This event occurs on a First Thursday, when museum admission is free for Bay Area residents.

On the day of Gene Kelly’s death, a dancer will sing in the rain.

Pierre Huyghe’s artwork, Singing in the Rain (1996), which entered the SFMOMA collection in 2022, features gold shoes atop a white pedestal covered in scuff marks that point to past performances. The piece will be activated by a dancer on February 2, the anniversary of the death of Gene Kelly, Golden Age Hollywood actor and star of the 1952 movie musical Singin’ in the Rain. On this year’s anniversary, come and watch Katie Baritell revive the film’s titular song and tap-dance number, originally performed by Kelly.
