How can we teach students, as Paulo Freire believed, to read both the word and the world? Building upon educator Deborah Appleman’s work around teaching literary theory with adolescents, participants in this workshop will explore ways to support students in developing a critical framework to interpret the world around them. Using artworks in SFMOMA’s collection as the basis for discussion, participants will apply critical lenses to analyze artworks from various perspectives, such as gender/feminist, critical race, Marxist/social class, formalist, and historical. This half-day professional development workshop is designed for high school teachers, but all K–12 educators are welcome to attend.
