Apsara DiQuinzio, curatorial associate, painting and sculpture, SFMOMA
Rauschenberg invented the word combine to describe his work, which was neither painting nor sculpture exclusively. DiQuinzio discusses Rauschenberg’s artistic innovations using a number of works in the SFMOMA collection as springboards. The program includes Karen Thomas’s documentary about the artist (1999, 60 min.), featuring David Byrne, Merce Cunningham, and Brice Marden, with narration by Dennis Hopper.
