This Halloween, trade the pumpkin patch for something a little more avant-garde. Bring your crew — whether that’s your toddler in a Warhol wig or your friends in full coordinated costume — to SFMOMAween. We’re taking over Floors 1, 2, and 4 for an all-ages celebration of creativity, performance, and art.
Join us for a costume contest, drag performance, art making, and puppetry. Drag king Luismi Monstruo Rude will host the Halloween costume contest and perform a spooky number of his own. Come dressed as your favorite artwork, artist, or anything else whimsical, scary, cute, or delightfully strange. See the contest details below.
1:30 p.m. | Costume contest hosted by Drag King Luismi Monstruo Rude
Floor 1, Phyllis Wattis Theater
Show off your costume for the chance to win a prize! We’re looking for handmade, original costumes that make a creative connection to the exhibitions on view at SFMOMA. Costumes can interpret a specific artwork or artist, draw inspiration from a theme or idea in the exhibitions, or take a more unexpected approach to the museum’s collection and galleries.
Costume contest registration opens outside of Wattis Theater at 12:30 p.m. Open to all ages. Limited capacity; first come, first served.
11 a.m.–1 p.m. | Art Making
Floor 2, Koret Education Center
Make Halloween-themed art with SCRAP!
11 a.m. + 2:30 p.m. | Lysistrata performance by Facing West Shadows
Floor 4, White Box
Enjoy a performance of Lysistrata with handmade animation, puppets, live music, and cast shadows. This reimagining of Aristophanes’ tragi-comedy explores themes of collective resistance and the pursuit of peace.
