Spirits of the Dead is based on three supernatural short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, each interpreted by a major director. In Vadim’s Metzengerstein, a medieval countess (Jane Fonda) lusts after her cousin (Peter Fonda). In Fellini’s Toby Dammit, a drunken and disheveled movie star (Terrence Stamp) runs into trouble in Rome. Malle’s William Wilson features Alain Delon as an S&M-practicing Austrian student, with Brigitte Bardot among his victims. Toby Dammit was restored by CS-Cineteca Nazionale with supervision of Giuseppe Rotunno.
