Join artist Marco Flavio of Out There Watercolors for a unique watercolor workshop inspired by Henri Matisse’s Femme au chapeau. Matisse’s radical use of color sent shockwaves through the art world, and in this workshop participants are invited to paint with colors in a whole new way.

Marco will lead an interactive discussion and close-looking experience in front of Matisse’s painting, followed by a hands-on color study and watercolor painting session. No prior painting experience required. Recommended for ages fourteen and up.

Meet in the Koret Education Center before heading up to the galleries to view Femme au chapeau.

About the Artist

Marco Flavio is a San Francisco–based watercolor artist, educator, and founder of Out There Watercolors, where he leads watercolor expeditions in gardens, museums, and urban spaces. Trained in classical painting in his native Rome and in woodblock printmaking in Tokyo, Marco brings a warm, observational approach to teaching. His workshops for the San Francisco Botanical Garden, Sharon Art Studio, and private clients invite beginners and advanced artists alike to slow down, look closer, make social connections, and find their own distinct watercolor style. Marco continues to show work internationally and collaborates with a range of local cultural institutions, including the Asian Art Museum, Presidio Trust, San Francisco Arts Commission, and SFMOMA.
