Play sports-themed video games in SFMOMA’s community-designed Artcade. Three proposals were selected from an open call, and the winning teams spent the summer designing and building their game. Presented alongside Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture, the selected games reflect on the expansive nature of play, spectatorship, and the close relationship between competition and collaboration.
Aaron Freedman is a game designer, developer, and professor based in Brooklyn. His most recent game is Open Roads, a road trip adventure game that explores family secrets. He is currently working on a narrative documentary game, Normandie. He has taught game design at both New York University and The New School.
Nina Freeman is a game designer and streamer based in Maryland. She is best known for her work designing and writing autobiographical games, including Cibele and Last Call. She is currently working on an indie horror game called Size Zero and is the narrative designer for the upcoming game Lost Records: Bloom & Rage.
Diego Garcia is a game developer, animator, and professor based in Brooklyn. His most recent game release is Casual Birder — a game about birdwatching imposter syndrome. He also designed Ball Breaker, a game for the television series The Bear. He currently teaches Game Development and Animation for Games at NYU.
Celeste Clark Jewett is a game designer and composer based in Los Angeles. She has provided music and sound design for various movies, theater projects, and games, including the interactive theater project You Are the Hero (2015) and the short film Unholy Guacamole (2018). She is a designer on the WATERBOX game The Price of Flight (2025) which was a finalist in the 2023 Indiecade Festival and won the Excellence in System Design award at the Independent Games Festival 2023.
Jared Pettitt is a game designer and visual artist based in Santa Cruz. His work is inspired by and in response to media-poisoned and self-destructive culture. He is a PhD candidate in UC Santa Cruz’s Computational Media Department, focusing on researching and designing game creation tools. Pettitt is currently teaching Game Systems Design at UC Santa Cruz.
Tyler Knowlton is a programmer and game designer. Knowlton is currently an MA student in Scientific Computing and Applied Math at UC Santa Cruz.
Annalivia Martin-Straw is a game designer and artist based in Los Angeles. She graduated in 2023 from UC Santa Cruz with a BA in Art.
