Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has become one of the most celebrated artists of the twentieth century for her extraordinary body of work. This episode focuses on Kahlo's artistic and cultural legacy, with commentary by art historian Whitney Chadwick, Kahlo biographer Hayden Herrera, artist and scholar Amalia Mesa-Bains, and artist and curator René Yañez. In addition, contemporary artist Kiki Smith reveals why she thinks Kahlo is the first modern artist, and the performance artist, writer, and MacArthur Fellow Guillermo Gómez-Peña performs an original piece called “Frida lite or Fat-free dah,“ originally broadcast on public radio in 2003.Each SFMOMA Artcast brings you illuminating audio and video interviews with artists, curators, and visitors as they respond to the work on view at SFMOMA.Produced in collaboration with Antenna Audio.
