Sounds Like...The Soundtrack to a Closed Museum

by , September 2020

SFMOMA · Sounds Like…An Empty SFMOMA

An empty museum is a lonely one. Over the course of SFMOMA’s closure, the digital team asked staff members to help us document the museum during this unprecedented time. These are the noises and ambient sounds they captured, from the delicate whistle surrounding Alexander Calder’s mobiles to the unexpected din of a dispenser of hand sanitizer echoing through our halls. Made surreal against the backdrop of our prolonged closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these otherwise benign sounds offer a strange soundtrack to a closed SFMOMA.

We can’t wait until our galleries are once again brimming with the whispers, laughter, and conversations of our community and colleagues. We leave you with the sound of something welcome on the horizon: the installation and preparation of a new work of art that we look forward to sharing with you soon.
