Alice

By Jan Svankmajer, 1988 (In Czech with English subtitles)

Followed by a discussion with Heather Crow, UC Berkeley scholar and Svankmajer specialist

When Alice follows the White Rabbit into Wonderland, so begins this dream expedition into the astonishing landscape of childhood, through many dangerous adventures, and ultimately to Alice’s trial before the King and Queen of Hearts. Czech animator Jan Svankmajer has created a masterpiece of cinema and a strikingly original interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale. Svankmajer’s Alice remains true to the absurdity of Carroll’s original, but bears the stamp of the director’s distinctive style and obsessions. Combining animation and live action, Svankmajer gives a new and fascinating dimension to the classic tale of childhood fantasies.

On_Line

By Jed Weintrob, 2002

Followed by a discussion with Jed Weintrob, director

Set in Manhattan’s cybersex industry, On_Line at first appears to be about people getting off without ever touching. John Roth (Josh Hamilton) runs a live erotic Web site called Intercon-X. Though profitable, the site, which he owns with his roommate Moe (Harold Perrineau), keeps Roth at home in a state of perpetual frustration. Roth works between shots of peppermint schnapps and Web cam diary entries in which he pines for his ex-fiancée. Built around revealing and often funny streaming video sessions with netizens like “man-on-man” host Al Fleming (John Fleck), Internet fantasy girl Jordan Nash (Vanessa Ferlito), self-destructive artist Moira Ingalls (Isabel Gillies) and Ohio innocent Ed Simone (Eric Millegan), On_Line uses a groundbreaking mix of new technology and romantic narrative to tell a classic New York story.

The Seventh Art: New Dimensions in Cinema continues on the second Thursday of every month in SFMOMA’s Wattis Theater. Tickets for each film are $15 general admission; $12 SFMOMA members, students with current ID and seniors. Advance tickets may be purchased at the SFMOMA admissions desk.
