SFMOMA Remembers David Ireland

On September 14, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) will host a memorial service in honor of Bay Area artist David Ireland, who passed away last spring. Ireland is recognized as one of the West Coast’s most important and critically acclaimed practitioners of conceptual and installation art. 

The afternoon includes a program in the Phyllis Wattis Theater, featuring speakers who were close to Ireland and his work, followed by a gathering in The Schwab Room. Speaking will be Jack Cox, family friend; Tom Marioni, artist and friend; Karen Tsujimoto, senior curator of art, Oakland Museum of California; and Jock Reynolds, Henry J. Heinz II director, Yale University Art Gallery.

5 p.m. Public remembrance • The Schwab Room

A gallery within the exhibition Matisse and Beyond featuring nine works by Ireland is on view through November 8. The gallery will be open to the public during the memorial.

Seating in the Phyllis Wattis Theater is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Donations in memory of the artist can be made to California College of the Arts, San Francisco Art Institute, and The Campus School Legacy Scholarship Fund in Bellingham.
