The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is pleased to announce the Summer and Fall 2008 family programs schedule, for which free museum and program admission are extended to all participants. The museum will present The Family Studio twice monthly—on the first and third Sunday of each month—as well as the popular Target Family Day, which will be held October 19, 2008. Recent grants from Target and The Wallace Foundation directly support SFMOMA’s family program expansion and free admission to the museum for all families participating in the programs.

ANIMAL ESTATES
July 6 and 20
Working with special guest artist Fritz Haeg as part of his Animal Estates 5.0: San Francisco project, these Family Studios focus on creating model homes for the California slender salamander (July 6) and the peregrine falcon (July 20). Join us on July 6 for an animal-inspired garment-making workshop and on July 20 for an animal movement workshop.

Discover the various ways artists portray themselves in self-portraits. Using works from the SFMOMA collection as inspiration, create your own unique self-portrait. Don’t miss a special reading of Frida Kahlo: The Artist Who Painted Herself by Margaret Frith at 2 p.m.
MARAVILLAS DE MEXICO: MEXICAN MARVELS

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the art of Frida Kahlo, whose work is proudly rooted in her Mexican heritage. Learn how Kahlo’s folkloric style was inspired by traditional Mexican art, then enjoy a reading from Horse Hooves and Chicken Feet: Mexican Folktales, written by Neil Phillip and illustrated by Jacqueline Mair.

Focusing on the exhibition Brought to Light: Photography and the Invisible, this Family Studio explores what happens when science and photography collide. Prepare for school picture day with a reading of Charlie and Lola: Say Cheese! by Lauren Child.

This Family Studio focuses on the work of Alexander Calder, engaging families with a medley of colors and shapes. The afternoon includes a reading of Calder’s Circus, by the Roland Collection.
