SFMOMA Commemorates 9/11 Tragedies With Cash Donations And Artistic Creations Family Day On October 21 Offers Chance To Reflect

Released: October 05, 2001 ·

From October 11 to October 21, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) will donate 5% of its admissions proceeds—plus any contributions that visitors wish to make in a special box in the Haas Atrium—to the American Red Cross in commemoration of the tragic events of September 11. Family Day on Sunday, October 21, will offer people of all ages the opportunity to respond creatively to the disaster, and the resulting artworks will be compiled into books by the San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross to be shared with chapters on the East Coast. A selection of the artworks will also be exhibited in the public vitrines along the SFMOMA garage on Minna and Natoma Streets. Family Day admission fees for adults will be donated to the American Red Cross. In addition, free admission to the Museum will be extended to firefighters, police officers and emergency medical technicians and their families for the duration of the Ansel Adams at 100 exhibition, which runs through
January 13, 2002.

“We all deeply sympathize with the victims and want to offer our condolences in a meaningful way,” said Ruth Berson, acting co-director of SFMOMA. “We look for what we as an organization can do from a distance, using art as part of the healing process during these tumultuous times.”

The impetus for the commemoration at SFMOMA came from The California Remembrance Project, a unique partnership between the American Red Cross and the California Arts Council for the purpose of promoting remembrance and healing for the September 11 victims, their loved ones, and all those seeking consolation and perspective in the wake of the terrorist attacks.
