SFMOMA WELCOMES SUMMER WITH EXPANDED HOURS

Released: May 22, 2009 ·

Beginning on Memorial Day (Monday, May 25, 2009), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) will open its galleries at 10 a.m.—one hour earlier than usual—to accommodate the summertime schedules of out-of-town visitors and local residents.

SFMOMA’s extended hours will give visitors additional opportunities to see two highly anticipated summer exhibitions: Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: Natural Affinities (on view May 30 through September 7, 2009); and Richard Avedon: Photographs 1946–2004 (on view July 11 through November 29, 2009).

Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams, two of America’s best-known artists, are both revered for their ability to capture, in their unique ways, the essence of natural beauty. This exhibition brings together nearly 100 works from the painter and the photographer, revealing parallels between their distinctive visions of the natural world.

Whether photographing politicians, artists, models, or Hollywood stars, Richard Avedon revolutionized the genre of portraiture. His daring style rejected conventional poses and instead captured both motion and emotion in his subjects. SFMOMA is the only U.S. venue for this career retrospective, which features more than 200 photographs.

The museum’s summer hours will remain in effect through Labor Day (Monday, September 7, 2009). Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, September 8, when the museum galleries will open at 11 a.m. The MuseumStore and Caffè Museo will continue to open at 10 a.m. throughout the year.
