Event Policies

Availability/Timelines

SFMOMA is committed to making designated spaces in the Museum available for special events by corporations, associations, organizations and individuals, both during and after public hours on a space-available basis in the manner described in these guidelines.

Day event hours are generally considered to be between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., and evening hours between 6:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., subject to availability. Access for set-up and strike may be scheduled outside of these hours through the Rental Events department.

Types of Events

The following types of events are not permitted in the Museum:

To avoid the appearance of the Museum’s involvement in favoring or opposing candidates for public office, ballot measures, or political parties, political campaign events or celebrations of any kind (“Political Events”) are prohibited inside the Museum.

For the purpose of this policy, a “Political Event” is an event conducted for the purpose of:

Fundraising Events

The Museum reserves the right to allow private fundraising events held by 501(c)(3) organizations and government agencies, on a case-by-case basis, provided that the event sponsor has expressly disclosed the fundraising purpose and beneficiary(ies) of the event to the Museum in advance of the signing of the rental agreement and meets the following supplemental criteria:

Concurrent Events

For any events that are not full-facility rentals, SFMOMA reserves the right to book concurrent events in any spaces or galleries not included in your rental contract. SFMOMA will work to avoid conflicts when there is more than one event scheduled in the museum.

Event Staff

SFMOMA provides an Event Manager, Event Specialists, and Coat Check staff for all rental events. The Event Manager will assist you with logistics during load-in/out and will approve the satisfactory cleanup of food and beverage stations and décor following your event. The Event Specialists will be on hand to help with facility related needs.

Security

SFMOMA provides security for all entrance(s) and exit(s) of the rented event spaces and galleries.

Caterers

SFMOMA requires the use of Approved Caterers for all events. No outside caterers may be used. Each caterer on our list is familiar with SFMOMA’s facility, policies, and procedures, and carries our required insurance and liquor liability insurance.

Outside Vendors

Before each event, all vendors are required to schedule a walkthrough with a member of SFMOMA’s Rentals team to make arrangements regarding load-in timeline, power needs, floor plans, and load-out procedures.
