In this view of the back of Collection, the blue, yellow, and red fabrics that cover the work’s surface can be seen wrapping around the edges of each of the three canvas panels. The stains seen here were likely created when glue or sizing that had been applied to reinforce the canvas seeped through and stuck to the wooden work table or platform on which the panels were resting, picking up a bit of the wood grain when the panels were lifted again.
