This image of Collection shows measurements and a price of $900 written in white chalk in an unknown hand at the top right corner of the back of the work. The date of this inscription is uncertain, but the sum is consistent with 1957–59 prices for similar works by Rauschenberg recorded in the papers of the Leo Castelli Gallery in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Rauschenberg began showing with Castelli as part of a 1957 group show; a solo exhibition followed in March 1958. By 1960, prices for Rauschenberg’s works of this scale had more than tripled.
