Rauschenberg used a range of techniques to create the highly articulated textures on the surface of Untitled [glossy black painting]. In some areas, he dipped crumpled newspaper into paint and attached it to the canvas; in other sections he brushed or drizzled paint over areas of previously applied newspaper. Although the vast majority of the surface is completely covered with black paint, this detail reveals a small area of exposed newspaper.
