Rauschenberg’s Untitled [glossy black painting] is shown here in a conservation handling frame built to facilitate the 2012 replacement of the honeycomb insert on the back of the work. This photo depicts the painting during treatment, without the insert. When secured to the wall in the handling frame, the canvas can be safely accessed from behind while the surface of the work remains elevated from the wall. The frame makes use of existing hardware on the back of the work that is usually used to fasten it into a travel frame or crate for transportation or storage.
