This view of the back of Untitled [glossy black painting] shows one of the braces that Rauschenberg added to the corners of the wooden stretcher to help stabilize the work. The following inscription is written on the brace in pencil: “RAUSCHENBERG—61 FULTON ST. N.Y.C.” Rauschenberg moved into a studio at this address shortly after returning from Europe in April 1953, and lived there until September 1955. The date of the inscription is unknown.
