Lane Kirkland (1922–1999) is honored in Labor (Tribute 21) for his advocacy on behalf of the American labor rights movement. From 1979 to 1995, he served as president of the American Federation of Labor–Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). In 1994, the year the brochure was produced, Kirkland was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton. The brochure pairs this quote by Kirkland with Rauschenberg’s print: “We look forward to the 21st Century in which the free labor unions of the world will work in close harmony with each other.”
