Curatorial Document

Nature (Tribute 21) pays tribute to French explorer, photographer, and scientist Jacques-Yves Cousteau (1910–1997), who studied and documented the ocean and marine life. Through a series of popular films made for television, Cousteau tirelessly educated the public about the devastating effects of pollution and coastal development on ocean ecosystems. The brochure celebrates Cousteau’s conservation efforts. Paired with a reproduction of Rauschenberg’s print is a quote by Cousteau that reads: “We must plant the sea and herd its animals . . . using the sea as farmers instead of hunters. That is what civilization is all about—farming replacing hunting.”
